What does beyond a reasonable doubt mean?
Beyond a reasonable doubt is the burden placed on a prosecutor to prove someone guilty of a crime. It is the highest burden in the law. We like to say that it’s a doubt that has a reason. Can’t be forced, it’s not beyond all doubt, but there’s got to be some basis for it. For instance, if you’re making a decision to have an operation on your child you make that decision because it’s one of the most important decisions of your life beyond a reasonable doubt. That’s the kind of burden it is. That’s how heavy it is and that’s the way the law is written in Florida.
