Why have I received a grand jury subpoena?
Well, there could be several reasons. First, understand what a grand jury is. A grand jury is a secret proceeding, you can’t take your lawyer in there with you. All the questions are asked by the prosecutor and whatever happens in there, again, is secret. Now, you can be going in there first as a witness or you can be going in there as a person of interest, which means that you possibly committed a crime, or you could be going in there as a target, which means you’re the reason that grand jury’s meeting and they want to indict you. So the first thing you’ve got to do is find out, “Why am I going in there, and do I want to go in there unprotected, and do I have a Fifth Amendment right to not testify in that grand jury?” All these things are things you should discuss with your lawyer.
